YouTube has democratized the artistry of filmmaking. With imagination and even minimal resources, any creator can release their vision to the entire world. And YouTube has it all. Horror, drama, action, and science fiction can all be seen there. Or even comedy as presented here.
Here are three shorts made with the intent of bringing a smile to your face are looked at in this review.
I hope you enjoy!

Intersection
- Written and Directed by Brendan Beachman
- August 29, 2016
The relationship between two roadworkers turns deadly when a meteorite falls into their lives. Sounds funny…
There was certainly some potential in Intersection for dark comedy. But while dark and odd I am not seeing where the actual comedy is. Nothing is funny. The characters are a little weird and the situation is definitely strange. Traffic controllers that are sent to nowhere for…? Before things get going the characters repeatedly point out it is virtually unused.
And why did the one-character run from his only logical way out of the desert when the truck was coming to pick them up? Was the whole punchline of the film to have a plan which he clearly did not? I don’t know.
They tout this as award winning. A sucker is born every minute they say and judges in competitions are as likely to be suckered as anybody. This is an artfully made film that is designed to look sophisticated and perhaps those judges felt social pressure to say it was good when it was just technically well made.
Intersection is an okay idea that had no actual laughs. Pass.

Pain Killer
- Written, Directed, and Edited by Alexander Jones
- May 8, 2023
A woman suffering from migraines on her way to a booty call confronts local criminals.
The idea behind Pain Killer isn’t bad, but the execution is a bit weak. Then again I am left with the impression that One Dollar Genre does what it does as quickly and cheaply as possible. Our migraine suffering lead character is searching not only for some penis but any drug to temper her pain.
This would work much better as part of a larger comedy film. It feels like it’s setting up something more. Like an independent film about one really crazy night. I could certainly see this expanded upon. Not that it feels incomplete but more like the first arc in a greater narrative. And her defeat of the villain feels weak and not comically silly.
Pain Killer is not bad, but its biggest flaw is that it feels like part of a story and not the whole story. Check it out but do not expect laughs.

Folgers Incest Commercial-Extended Cut
- Directed by Tim Bierbaum
- December 9, 2015
- Concept by Dan Chamberlain and Joanna Bradley
This is a short parody of a well-known Folgers commercial that bothered a great many people. If you see the original which is part of this film you get exactly what I mean. Whether intentional or not it looks like the brother and sister are flirting a little bit in the original.
They dive deep into making this poorly executed commercial about a sibling bond into something so very wrong and funny. This short goes full throttle off the deep end and spirals into hilarious lunacy climaxing with a fistfight between father and son after a marriage proposal.
Folgers Incest Commercial-Extended Cut is that great short that takes a gag and pushes it as far as it can go. You will definitely laugh here. I recommend it.

The first was a disappointment, the second was enjoyable enough while the third definitely struck my funny bone. I think that is by far the best of the options.
