Just Some Thoughts On…Why I Am Not a Big Fan Of Quentin Tarantino

I make no secret that I am not a big fan of Quentin Tarantino’s work. Pulp Fiction was enjoyable in its day, and I even enjoyed Django Unchained but by and large his movies follow the same template time after time. His work is repetitive. There is no variation or attempt at variation in what he does. The closest we get is a switch in time period. If you have seen one Quentin Tarantino movie you have pretty much seen them all.

Tarantino is okay but I do not see him as this directing god that others do. One of my issues with Tarantino is he has three favorite words he likes to use frequently in his dialogue: n***r, s**t, and f**k. And he uses them a lot in all his movies. Sometimes it appears to be all the character can say. I am not against profanity. He just relies on it in my opinion at the expense of actual dialogue.

Tarantino writes like a child trying to be edgy. His writing is immature and uncreative. He has not grown beyond the kid that wrote his first screenplay and vowed to never give his mother any money. Despite all his creative shortcomings he has developed a strong cult following and gets regularly employed. Kudos to his marketing department.

You can expect the resolution to be violent in his films. Violence is not the issue but rather that seems to be the default finale in Tarantino’s playbook. He has run out of story so time to kill as many characters as violently as possible. It feels a bit lazy to me.

It looks as if Tarantino met all the right people and managed to impress them or convince them that they should be impressed by him and once he built up a cult following that brought in money largely through the Weinstein Company, they could not really kick him to the curb. They are willing to suck the udder of this cash cow until it runs dry.

I see nothing particularly special or great about his work. And that touches on another reason I am not a fan of Quentin Tarantino. If you do not worship all that he does and can offer reasons why you do not enjoy one movie or another of his then you can certainly expect his rabid fanbase to come at you and tear you apart. People have called Star Wars fans or other film universe fans toxic. I would add fans of Quentin Tarantino as toxic.

So you do not like one of his movies or do not hold the opinion approved by the orthodoxy of the cult then they will come at you and question everything about you and your tastes. They are not interested in a debate or discussion. They are only interested in casting out the unbeliever. For example I one time mentioned I was not into Quentin Tarantino to a Facebook friend and not only did they unfriend me but they blocked me. Another time I got kicked out of a Facebook group because I questioned the blind loyalty of his fans.

Watch out if you do not feel that his latest release is an instant classic. Do not believe one of his films is brilliant? Burn the heretic! How can one find enjoyment in someone’s work if that type of psychology can be found in their fans?

Why do I or would anyone want to get involved in a group like that? How can you enjoy something if you believe that someone may come at you if you do not enjoy it the way they feel it should be? Or you do not enjoy it at all?

With not only the substandard quality of his work but the fanatical nature of his fanbase I just cannot really like him or what he makes. Maybe if he had a more tolerant fan base or more creative range or both I might be more willing to take in and embrace his content but as it stands I cannot be a fan of him.
