“What if the person closest to you, were a devil in disguise. Would you see the signs?”
These are stories of people who shared a home and a life with a person who would become a killer.
Evil Lives Here is a great true crime documentary series from Investigation Discovery. It tells true stories of individuals that lived with some genuinely evil people. Some knew exactly what they had under their roof. Others were surprised to learn that they had anything terrible near them or even just how terrible those people really were.
There’s a different story each week. In a little over forty minutes they set up the story and people involved. One of those involved narrates the story. Occasionally a second person may contribute as well. It helps to make the story much more relatable than could be accomplished with a dispassionate individual.
You see how anyone can encounter true evil. The stories presented on Evil Lives Here are as much about the darkness everywhere and as they are about those who encounter the darkness and survive it. Some do better than others and some are still trying to come to terms and truly believe that the people they knew and loved really did the things that they were accused of.
In that you learn how hard it can be the spot what is obvious to the viewer. You’re living in that life and you find ways to deny the truth and look the other way or justify that odd bit that in hindsight was a major clue. That is an all too human element. We want to make the abnormal normal and people find ways to do just that.
They craft a human driven narrative where you as the viewer come to care about the individuals being portrayed or discussed. You are pulled into the narrative each time and you wanna know how it ends.
There are plenty of true crime television shows. They are nothing new. What gets this to stand out aside from the human element of it are its production values. This doesn’t look like some cheaply done bargain basement documentary film but rather something of a higher quality. There is time and direction and good work put into it.
Evil Lives Here is a fantastic true crime series that will get you hooked from the first minute. You’ll enjoy each and every episode. I strongly recommend this. As of this writing the show can be found on Discovery+, Investigation Discovery, and Hulu/Disney. Whatever means you choose you should take a look. You will not be disappointed.
