Carl Weathers

  • Born: January 14, 1948 in New Orleans, Louisiana, U.S.
  • Died: February 1, 2024 in Los Angeles, California, U.S.

It’s weird when the icons of your youth pass. You expect them to be around forever, but they are only human and humans pass on.

Carl Weathers made a lasting impact as Apollo Creed in the Rocky films, Chubbs in Happy Gilmore, the character Greef Karga in The Mandalorian among so much else in his career. Starting in football he made his way into acting becoming a distinct part of the memories of generations of entertainment consumers.

Weathers was always entertaining. Maybe not the greatest thespian but he kept you watching be it Action Jackson or the original Predator. He brought a great many characters in a great many excellent films that generations a long time from now will still be watching and enjoying.

Carl Weathers has left an entertainment legacy which will keep his memory alive far into the future.

  1. As I’ve gotten older, losing icons, as you say, happens all too often and it is so depressing, its like parts of my life are disappearing. Frazetta, Bradbury, Buscema, Lemmon, Clarke, Horner, Goldsmith, Vangelis, Prince, Peart, its crazy. I usually text one of my buddies that ‘another one is gone’ and we reminisce and fear who is next. We morbidly joke that when Shatner goes, that’s it, Game Over.

Regards Carl Weathers, his passing feels especially sad as I rewatched all the Rocky films last year and he was such a pleasure to watch in them. As you say, a big icon indeed and one who will be remembered. I think I’ll give Predator a rewatch next week.
